Description
The South African radiation protection community is represented by two associations, namely the Southern African Radiation Protection Association (SARPA) and the South African Radiation Protection Society (SARPS). The Societies have jointly agreed that for the purposes of affiliation to IRPA, the societies will be represented under the banner SARPS.
SARPA
SARPA was established on 10 September 1997 with the vision to be an independent association which will serve the objectives and profession of radiation protection not only in South Africa but also in the broader Southern African region. The interest of SARPA is being served by an annually elected executive committee.
The SARPA Objectives are
(i) To promote and further the science of, and the professional interests of, radiation protection.
(ii) To provide a forum whereby persons engaged in the professional practice of radiation protection may interact and promote their professional interests.
(iii) To assist persons engaged in the professional practice of radiation protection through advice, information and research.
(iv) To organise scientific and public meetings on the applications of radiation protection procedures and safety in general.
(v) To render advice and assistance in matters pertaining to the profession of radiation protection and related matters.
SARPS
SARPS was established in 1970 with the mission to promote Radiation Protection in Medicine, Science, Agriculture, Commerce and Industry in South Africa with an emphasis on Health Care. The society seeks to reduce the radiation dose received by the public, workers and patients by promoting awareness of radiation protection procedures and techniques.
The objectives of SARPS are
(i) To provide as a primary purpose a medium whereby persons engaged in the professional practice of health physics may advance the science of health physics.
(ii) To organize scientific meetings on the application of physics to health and safety in general.
(iii) To render advice and assistance in matters pertaining to the profession of health physics.
(iv) To further the professional interests of health physicists.
