Description
The Nordic Society for Radiation Protection was founded on June 10, 1964 in Stockholm. Professor Rolf Sievert was the principal initiator and arranged the founding assembly in which members of the nordic radiation protection community in all the nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) participated. The society became a member of the IRPA (the International Radiation Protection Association) in 1964. In 1966 the first of what was to become regular meetings was held in Stockholm. Later came meetings in Oslo (1968), Copenhagen (1971), Helsinki (1974), Visby (1977), Reykjavik (1981), Copenhagen (1984), Mariehamn (1987), Ronneby (1990), Kristiansand (1993), Reykjavik (1996) and Skagen (1999). The next regular meeting shall take place in Finland in 2002.
The primary purpose of the society is to provide a nordic forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of radiation protection, including protection of workers, patients exposed for diagnistic or therapeutic purpose, and members of the public. To achieve this objective, the society arrange regular meetings (conferences) in the nordic region where members can meet each other and exchange information. The regular meetings are held every third year and have an extensive and widespread programme of lectures including invited lectures. When the need is expressed and the resources are found, topicalmeetings are arranged. Through the membership of IRPA the society is connected to the network of radiation protection societies.
